Support a Jewish state in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/25282\/25282-h\/25282-h.htm\">Argentina<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Yiddish_Policemen%27s_Union\">Alaska<\/a>? You&#8217;re a Zionist. Support a Jewish state alongside a Palestinian one? You&#8217;re a Zionist. Support Israel being compelled to give back the lands it occupied post-1967, but there still being an Israel? Still a Zionist.<\/p>\n<p>Things seem to be changing. From a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/2026\/07\/10\/united-states\/a-growing-number-of-federations-are-asking-jews-if-they-identify-as-zionist-and-grappling-with-the-results\">poll of Jews in Milwaukee<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The survey, released last week by the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, found that 43% of Jewish adults said they identified as Zionist, while 42% said they did not. A much higher share \u2014 69% \u2014 said they feel somewhat or very \u201cemotionally attached to Israel.\u201d At the same time, 52% of respondents agreed that \u201cIsrael regularly violates the human rights of the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is, I think, something to keep in mind when one hears explicitly anti-&#8220;Zionist&#8221; rhetoric in the Palestine solidarity movement and on the Left generally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally, Zionism (and related words like Zionist) pertained simply to support for some sort of Jewish state somewhere (not necessarily even in the Middle East).
