{"id":4329,"date":"2019-08-22T14:12:26","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T21:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blackcap.name\/blog\/new\/?p=4329"},"modified":"2019-08-22T14:18:03","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T21:18:03","slug":"e-begging-or-needs-versus-wants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackcap.name\/blog\/new\/?p=4329","title":{"rendered":"E-Begging, or, Needs versus Wants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seems as if GoFundMe requests are proliferating in my social network.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if the predominant motive behind such requests were genuine instances of <em>needs<\/em>, such as food, clothing, shelter, or health care, I&#8217;d find it upsetting because it serves as evidence the economy is failing increasingly more people.<\/p>\n<p>Most requests, however, are <em>not<\/em> for needs; they are for <em>wants<\/em>, things like name changes, transatlantic plane fares, recreational vehicles (that are used recreationally and not as a primary residence) and whatnot. I find <em>that<\/em> upsetting because of the whiny attitude of self-centered entitlement it represents.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry, e-beggars, your wants are <em>your<\/em> problem\u2014not mine. Figure out how to fund them yourself. I believe people are entitled to the necessities of life, but I <em>do not<\/em> believe anyone is entitled to luxuries at my expense.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s <em>particularly<\/em> the case given that we&#8217;re in a world where so many people <em>are<\/em> lacking basic needs, and in one where I am <em>myself<\/em> a person of limited means who can&#8217;t dream of things like taking a transatlantic vacation. And, guess what? I <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> go begging to other people to fund such luxuries which are unaffordable to me.<\/p>\n<p>If I once more become able to afford discretionary donations, rest assured I will be making such donations to those who <em>need<\/em> them, not those who merely <em>want<\/em> them. After all, every dollar I would donate to fund a mere want is a dollar I cannot donate to fund a geniune need.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems as if GoFundMe requests are proliferating in my social network.
