{"id":4040,"date":"2019-02-27T17:45:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T01:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blackcap.name\/blog\/new\/?p=4040"},"modified":"2019-04-23T21:16:20","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T04:16:20","slug":"not-just-bad-for-republicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackcap.name\/blog\/new\/?p=4040","title":{"rendered":"Not Just Bad for Republicans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2019\/02\/15\/when-next-democratic-president-grabs-emergency-powers-blame-trump\/\">an article<\/a> penned on the eve of Trump&#8217;s emergency declaration, conservative Trump critic Rick Wilson writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He\u2019s also opening a door that Republicans will regret walking through if and when executive power changes hands: When future President Biden, President Castro, President Harris or President Warren can\u2019t get push their agenda through Congress, they\u2019ll be able to do an end-run on the Constitution, claim emergency powers and cite Trump\u2019s precedent to justify it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The rub is, it goes far beyond just <em>Republicans<\/em> living to regret this ugly thing, should it survive court challenges. Suppose the next Democrat acts precisely as Wilson fears. Then what? It won&#8217;t <em>end<\/em> there; far from it! The only constant in politics is change. A right-winger will get into the White House soon enough, and with this whole &#8220;the president can rule by decree via emergency powers&#8221; business by then established even <em>more<\/em> firmly by precedent.<\/p>\n<p>What happens then? Most likely, something that makes Trump look like a harmless little fuzzball in comparison. Be afraid, be very afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Both that, and the earlier issue with a Democrat running rampant with unrestrained executive power, make me somewhat hopeful that the Supremes will slap this thing down.
