{"id":1624,"date":"2015-01-29T21:18:06","date_gmt":"2015-01-30T05:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blackcap.name\/blog\/new\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2015-02-03T15:59:18","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T23:59:18","slug":"maduros-days-are-numbered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackcap.name\/blog\/new\/?p=1624","title":{"rendered":"Maduro&#8217;s Days Are Numbered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The top-down sort of state socialism that the late Hugo Ch\u00e1vez implemented had its inefficiencies, but it survived for two reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Venezuala is a petro-state and could afford to throw enough money around to (mostly) paper them over, and<\/li>\n<li>The status quo Ch\u00e1vez upset had such gross inequalities that it didn&#8217;t matter for most Venezuelans that there were shortages of certain key consumer goods from time to time, since access to same had still <em>improved<\/em> for them (they had gone from often not being able to afford things to much less often occasionally running into shortages).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>But with the collapse in oil prices, the strains are now starting to show.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Saudi Arabia which has a lot of oil and only a few people, the situation is reversed in Venezuela. Maduro isn&#8217;t sitting on piles of money that he can draw on in the lean times. Plus, despite some of first Ch\u00e1vez&#8217; and now Maduro&#8217;s admittedly authoritarian policies, Venezuela is still <em>much<\/em> more free and open a society than Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/01\/02\/uk-venezuela-maduro-idUKKBN0KB11I20150102?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=worldNews\">Nicol\u00e1s Maduro&#8217;s popularity is now plummeting.<\/a> So it&#8217;s safe to make a prediction that his days are probably numbered.
